Signature of M
November 19, 2008
Nelson Bros is proud to be involved with Melbourne' s newest prestigious art competition, Signature of M during our 150th anniversary year.
With a staggering $150,000 first prize award and a total prize pool of $180,000, Signature of M is the most prestigious art competition in terms of prize money and concept. It seeks to encapsulate the essence of Melbourne in a tangible form of an artwork.
The theme the artists had to work with was " Melbourne Is ... Unforgettable...”
The competition’ s goal is to create a new iconic, artistic emblem for Melbourne that captures the city' s spirit in a contemporary image. This is a visual time capsule for the new Millennium - A personal signature for Melbourne city.
Over 360 small and large Melbourne businesses, Governmental and city bodies including Nelson Bros financed this art prize. This is the most significant historical business participation in the arts in Melbourne!
Over 380 signed reproductions of the winning piece (at 1,5 x 1,5 metres in size) will be hung up throughout the City of Melbourne as a permanent structure after the event, including one at Nelson Bros Funeral Services.
This image of Melbourne is of special international importance as Signature of M is one of several Signature Series of the World cities competition, the other cities being Sydney, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Paris, Beijing, Moscow, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. The ultimate aim is to compare 12 World City cultures through artistic eyes and capture each cities’ energetic vibe on a two dimensional artwork. Melbourne would be pitched against other cities
based on the winning entry.
The winner was announced at the Peninsula Exhibition Centre in Melbourne' s Docklands. Local Brunswick artist Peter Atkins was awarded first prize for his work.
He says, " I have used my personal collection of old books as the platform to express the history and cultural landscape of this incredible city. I was particularly interested in the use of the books as a metaphor because it is the intellectual and cultural depth within Melbourne that sets it apart from any other city in this country and what better way to illustrate this than with an image of a well stocked library."
" Approximately 400 books were used to construct this work. I carefully removed the existing titles and replaced them with new Melbourne based references. This allowed me enormous scope to explore the many stories that define Melbourne."
Nelson Bros is featured in this iconic Melbourne artwork and is proud to be recognised for our contribution over the past 150 years.
