Oakleigh General Cemetery 150th anniversary

This year' s Oakleigh Festival featured a cavalcade of historic funeral vehicles, including Nelson Bros 1926 Buick hearse.

The festival also commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Oakleigh General Cemetery, now known as the Oakleigh Pioneer Memorial Park.  There was an exhibition and a series of activities including guided tours of the Memorial Park, and launch of the booklet “ And their ghosts may be heard” . This booklet details historic and significant burials.

The Mayor of the City of Monash, Councillor Charlotte Baines, unveilied a plaque to commemorate the first known burial on the grounds, in 1860 of Christina Couper who died aged seven years.
