Chinese New Year
January 26, 2009
This year, the Chinese New Year (or Lunar New Year) is celebrated on January 26, Australia Day. It will be the Year of the Ox.
The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month (Chinese: 正 月 pinyin: zhē ng yuè ) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th.
Many of our community families celebrate this event. In Footscray, the Footscray Asian Business Association held their 19th annual festival around Hopkins and Droop Streets on January 11. Sponsored by local traders, the all-day event featured a street parade with traditional lion dancing and performances, Asian food and game stalls and carnival rides and ended with a fireworks display to herald the New Year.
